Their health, speed, and power depends on how large the empire is. If the ship gets destroyed during a battle you will receive a slight relationship decline, but not enough to sever your Alliance with them.
When you form an alliance with another empire in the galaxy, that empire will automatically send one of their spaceships to join your fleet.
